BUFFALO, NY - Thanks in part to a school-record 17 assists from junior
Shaquana Owens, the #7 Villa Maria women's basketball team started strong, and ended even stronger, routing #10 SUNY Delhi 102-62 on Sunday afternoon inside the Villa Athletic Center. The Vikings shot 50.6 percent from the floor and 38 percent from beyond on the arc on a day where Villa honored two of it's seniors.
Both
Clarissa Walker and
Dominique Davis were honored pregame as part of senior day. Walker finished with a team-high 14 rebounds and scored six points. Davis scored four points and dished out seven dimes. All players that hit the floor scored for Villa.
With the win, Villa captures the regular season Northeastern Intercollegiate Athletics Conference (NIAC) crown and the number-one seed in the conference tournament. The conference playoffs will be held at Villa on February 23rd and 24th. Villa will take on fourth-seeded College of St. Joseph at 4 p.m. on the 23rd.
Owens finished the game with 27 points and eight boards to go along with her 17 helpers. She was 9-of-17 from the floor and 7-of-11 from three. The Vikings held the Broncos to 33.8 percent shooting and won the battle on the boards, 53-37.
Sophomore
Nina Cray finished with a double-double for Villa as she scored 26 points and corralled 10 rebounds.
Bianca Brown scored 18 and had five helpers while
Leah McQuiller and
Tekia Gary chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively off the bench. McQuiller finished with a double-double, grabbing 10 boards.
The Vikings are back in action this Wednesday as they host SUNY Canton at 6 p.m
