Owens Late Game Heroics Propel Villa Past Jamestown

Sophomore buries late three to help Villa push past Jamestown

JAMESTOWN, NY - Shaquana Owens (Buffalo, NY/Tapestry Charter) connected on a game-saving three with 33 seconds left as the Villa Maria College Lady Vikings overcame some late adversity, defeating Jamestown Community College 65-60 on Sunday afternoon.

Owens hit a game-tying triple from the right corner off an inbounds play to knot the score at 60 with 33.1 seconds left, keeping the Lady Vikings' hopes alive late.  An even bigger play was made 11 seconds later when Owens and junior Dominique Davis (Buffalo, NY/Genesee Community) combined to force a steal before freshman Nina Cray (Wheatland, IA/Calamus-Wheatland) dove on the ground, coming up with the loose ball.  Davis then cashed that turnover into two points, finishing in the paint to give Villa a 62-60 lead.

The Vikings - ranked 12th in the latest United States Collegiate Athletic Association Division II National Coaches Poll - iced the game moments later.  After forcing a miss, senior Jayvonna Kincannon (Buffalo, NY/Genesee Community) completed an old-fashioned three-point-play.  Kincannon finished the game two assists shy of a triple-double, scoring 12 points, corralling 11 rebounds and dishing out eight helpers.

Owens added eight rebounds and six steals while Davis scored 10 points and had three steals.  Owens scored 14 of her points in the second half while Davis netted five points in each half.  Freshman Nina Cray (Wheatland, IA/Calamus-Wheatland) added eight points, six rebounds and five steals in 38 minutes while fellow freshman Leah McQuiller (Lackawanna, NY/Mount Mercy Academy) added five points and 10 rebounds.
